Promo Single Review: Ed Sykes Whiplashed

Ed Sykes takes us back to the 70s with “Whiplashed”

Single released via Manic Squat Records, 8th June 2018.

Ed Sykes is a musician with such a pedigree and musicality, so it’s no surprise that this, his debut single, is a tour-de-force of 70s glam production and songwriting.

“Whiplashed” takes us right back to when songs WHERE songs. Well constructed, thought out and hummable. Ed Sykes has professionally written and produced the song which has a clean, retro 70s vibe with hints of Bowie, Rolling Stones and a touch of urban grit ala Tom Robinson. Ed is a mature musician with a sense of what makes a good song and if this first single by him is anything to go by, he looks set to go far. We need more good music like this. Incidentally, Ed has paid a fitting and wonderful homage to the late, great David Bowie (an obvious influence) with a stripped down version of “Ziggy Stardust” featuring Bowie’s own pianist Mike Garson tickling the ivories and ex Pretty Thing Jon Povey on brass.

Lovely. 8/10. Roxie.
